The gauge cluster on the 2015-2020 Honda fit has a digital display on the right side of the cluster which sometimes goes blank. This display has both the odometer and the fuel gauge, so it’s necessary if you want to keep driving. It’s pretty much the same issue Prius owners face when their combination meter stops working; eventually you’ll run out of gas without a fuel gauge or any way to track miles traveled.
We can repair the display on your Fit’s speedometer!
Here’s the good news. We may be able to repair your Honda Fit fuel gauge and odometer for you, and it may not even be very expensive. We haven’t seen enough of these yet to be sure that all failures will be of the same type, but so far we’ve seen broken solders on the display ribbon cable and that’s a very easy repair.
How much does it cost to repair the fuel gauge and odometer on a Honda Fit?
We’ve done well over 100 Prius combination meter repairs, and we’re sure it will be nearly the same repair each time. We quote a price for repair with no diagnosis and guarantee a fix. Since we haven’t seen enough Fits gauge clusters yet, we’ll be treating each one as a new diagnosis.
If your Fit speedometer display is blank or doesn’t work intermittently, we’ll remove the unit and check for broken solders on the display ribbon cable. If we find them, we’ll repair them and test the unit and you’re done. Hooray!
However, we’re not yet confident that the ribbon cable is going to be the cause all the time. If that isn’t the issue, we’ll attempt to diagnose and repair the issue, but it’s possible that we won’t be able to diagnose the cause, or even if we do, we may not be able to purchase the component needed to repair the unit.
So, if you’d like us to repair your Honda fit fuel gauge and odometer, here’s what to expect. If it’s the ribbon cable, expect to pay for two hours of time (currently at $168/hr.) for removal, testing, repair, and installation.
What if it’s not broken solders? We’ll let you know the cost before proceeding with any work beyond the original quote.
If we can’t repair your gauge cluster, you’ll have the option to replace the cluster. We’ll need to temporarily install your old cluster to pull the odometer data with the Honda HDS scan tool so we can transfer your current mileage to the new unit. There won’t be an additional labor charge, but you’ll likely need to wait a few days for the part to arrive. Based on current prices the total will be around $1000.
How much will it cost? If everything goes well, $336. If not, around $1000.
Can I Repair my Honda Fit Gauge Display myself?
Could you just do this repair yourself? Yeah, maybe. If you’ve repaired or built electronics you should have no trouble with this repair. The most difficult part for you may be removing the speedometer head. I’d guess you’ll be able to find a YouTube tutorial. I just checked and found this Fit odometer repair tutorial including both removal and repair.
Are you pretty good with auto repair but not great at electronics repair? This is probably still a doable DIY project. These are small solder joints, but they’re nowhere near as difficult to handle as most tiny modern electronics. If you’re pretty good at basic soldering, you can likely handle it.
Can I mail you my speedometer head for repair?
We don’t do any mail order repairs. Try Auto Be Yours. If you’d like to drop a gauge cluster off for repair in person, we can probably do that. Give us a call first.
How can you test the display on a Fit gauge cluster on the bench?
The check if the display works, you really only need to power the speedometer head on terminals 15 and 16, and supply ground to terminals 1 and 17.
If you wanted to get fancy, you could simulate various fuel levels and pins 8 and 11 to verify all segments of the gauge work.
I don’t think this is necessary unless that’s the specific complaint. Verifying that the display lights up after the repair is enough.
