Common Mazda CX-5 display symptoms
The most common complaint is that the touch screen presses buttons by itself. Some owners describe the car as being haunted because the screen will change audio sources, move through menus, select navigation functions, or open settings without anyone touching the display.
Other symptoms can include spider cracks under the outer surface, peeling or cloudy areas in the screen, white spots or dots in the display, or a touch screen that becomes unreliable or unusable. Some vehicles may also store a display-related trouble code, but many owners notice the behavior long before they know a code is present.
What is ghost touch?
Ghost touch means the touch screen is reporting touches that are not actually happening. The infotainment computer thinks someone is pressing the display, so it responds by changing stations, selecting menu items, moving through settings, or performing other commands.
This can look like a software problem, and software problems do exist on modern infotainment systems. However, on the 2017-2020 Mazda CX-5, the classic ghost touch, cracked screen, peeling display, or white-dot complaint is usually caused by a failure in the touch screen lens / digitizer itself. A software update usually will not fix a physically failing touch panel.
We can repair your display without replacing the whole unit
The good news is that you don’t need to replace the entire radio/head unit. The center display is made of several parts. The screen lens, LCD, housing, mounting bracket, and electronic control board can be separated.
For this repair, we replace the failed screen lens / touch panel and reuse the original electronics. This keeps the repair more straightforward and avoids replacing expensive components that are still working properly
How we repair the Mazda CX-5 display
We start by verifying the complaint and confirming that the symptoms match the common CX-5 display lens failure. The center display is then removed from the dash and carefully disassembled on the bench.
The failed screen lens / digitizer is separated from the display assembly. The reusable electronics are transferred to the replacement Mazda screen lens, the display is reassembled, and the unit is installed back into the vehicle. Once installed, we verify that the screen displays properly and that the touch function no longer operates by itself.
Because the original electronics stay with the vehicle, this repair does not normally require replacing the CMU or reprogramming the infotainment system.
Why we prefer repairing the original display
Replacing an entire display assembly or infotainment unit can cost thousands of dollars. Buying a used display is possible, but there are differences in the design depending on trim level and buying the right used screen is harder than you think.
When the original display electronics are working properly, it makes more sense to keep them. The failure is usually in the screen lens / digitizer, so replacing that part directly addresses the problem without disturbing the rest of the infotainment system.
Is this a complicated electronics repair?
Compared with some of the electronic repairs we do, this one is fairly straightforward. We are not rebuilding a circuit board, repairing traces, replacing tiny surface-mount components, or reverse-engineering a module failure. Mazda made the screen lens available as a replacement part, so the repair is mostly careful disassembly and reassembly.
That does not mean the display is hard to damage. The unit contains fragile plastic, small connectors, ribbon cables, an LCD panel, and an electronic control board. If the display is pried apart incorrectly, a cable is pulled the wrong way, or the parts are forced together during reassembly, the repair can become more expensive very quickly.
Can I repair the Mazda CX-5 ghost touch problem myself?
This might be a DIY repair project if you have the skills. You don’t need any special tools or equipment or any electrical diagnostic skill. In fact all you need is three very basic tools. A trim pry bar, a 10mm socket, and a Phillips screwdriver.
If you’ve every replaced a cell phone battery or screen, you’ll be able to do this yourself. Just take your time and pay attention.
Will Mazda fix my display for free?
If your CX-5 is still under warranty, or if Mazda will cover the repair under an extended coverage program or goodwill policy, that may be your best option. It is worth checking with a Mazda dealer if you think your vehicle may still be covered.
