Most people understood what their car was telling them because Toyota and most other manufacturers used the same system for over 30 years. I guess Toyota decided understanding what your car wanted was getting too easy. You gotta keep drivers on their toes I guess.
So, if your Toyota displays: Engine Maintenance Required – Visit Your Dealer, it would be understandable for you to think you needed to schedule an appointment for maintenance. That’s certainly what I assumed the message meant the first time I saw it and I do this for a living.
What Does the Message Mean?
Here’s what the message actually means. Your car’s computer has detected a fault. It may still drive normally, but it needs diagnosis and may need repair—just as it would if the check-engine light were on. This is similar to the hybrid battery maintenance required message, which was equally frustrating when we first became aware of it.
You might think, “Wait, my car has a check engine light. If my car is broken, why isn’t that light coming on?” That’s a good question. The answer is that we don’t really know what Toyota’s reasoning is.
One possibility is that Toyota intended this message to be less alarming because the faults that trigger it are generally less urgent. Another is that Toyota reserves the check-engine light primarily for emissions-related faults and uses the “Engine Maintenance Required” message for other engine problems.
Neither explanation fits perfectly. Some faults that trigger this message, including P268111 and P268115, could affect engine warm-up and emissions. Toyota also uses similar “maintenance required” wording for hybrid-battery cooling problems, which may need prompt attention.
As we see more vehicles with this message and learn which faults trigger it, we may eventually develop a better theory. For now, the important point is that this is a fault warning—not a routine maintenance reminder.
“Maintenance Required” and “Engine Maintenance Required” are not the same thing
Toyota uses several messages that sound almost identical but mean very different things.

The word Engine changes the meaning of the message.
The ordinary maintenance reminder is basically a mileage counter. It can be reset after the service is completed.
The Engine Maintenance Required message is a diagnostic warning. Toyota’s owner information describes it as an indication that the engine or an engine component is malfunctioning and the issued a Tech Tip T-TT-0699-22 to help technicians confused by the new poorly thought out message.
WHy Isn’t the check-engine light on?
Toyota still uses the check-engine light, or MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) for some faults. But other faults will trigger the engine maintenance required message.
For example, the common Toyota coolant-bypass-valve codes P268111 and P268115 are programmed to store a DTC without illuminating the MIL on affected RAV4 models. The driver may see the Engine Maintenance Required message with no check-engine light at all.
Functionally, Toyota has created a second engine-fault warning system using a message on the multi-information display. Unfortunately, it labeled that warning “maintenance,” which causes many drivers, and sometimes mechanics (I’m guilty), to mistake it for a routine oil-change reminder.

What causes the “Engine Maintenance Required” message?
The message by itself does not identify the failed part. We’ll need to connect the Toyota GTS+ scanner and run a health check to find out what trouble code are stored and then do appropriate testing to find the failed component, wiring fault, mechanical problem, or whatever issue is causing the engine maintenance required message.
That said, one cause is especially common on several Toyota models from this period.
Common cause on the 2019–2021 Toyota RAV4
On many 2019, 2020, and 2021 Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles, the message is caused by a failed engine-coolant flow shut-off valve, also commonly called the:
- Coolant bypass valve
- Water bypass valve
- Heater flow-control valve
- Flow shutting valve
- Water bypass hose assembly
The common Toyota-specific trouble codes are:

These codes are common enough that the coolant valve is a reasonable first suspicion on an affected RAV4. It is still necessary to scan the vehicle before recommending the repair.
What does the coolant bypass valve do?
The valve is part of Toyota’s variable engine-cooling system.
During engine warm-up, the engine computer can close the valve to restrict coolant flow through the heater passage. This helps the engine reach operating temperature more quickly. The computer monitors the commanded position of the valve and its actual operating state.
If the valve sticks, its internal electrical components fail, the circuit opens or shorts, or the computer cannot confirm that the valve moved as commanded, the ECM stores a trouble code.
Can the coolant bypass valve cause overheating?
The common electrical failure does not automatically mean the engine will overheat.
The valve involved in the common RAV4 codes controls a branch of the cooling system associated with heater and warm-up operation. It is not the engine’s main thermostat. Many vehicles with this failure continue to maintain normal engine temperature.

If the coolant is full, the temperature remains normal, and the vehicle is operating normally, the common valve fault usually does not represent an immediate overheating event. It still needs to be diagnosed rather than dismissed as a service reminder.
If the temperature is high or coolant is being lost, the cooling-system problem should be treated separately from the wording of the dashboard message.
Can the message be reset?
There is no routine maintenance-reset procedure that repairs this warning.
Clearing the trouble code may temporarily remove the message, but it will return when the computer detects the fault again. Disconnecting the battery may have a similar temporary effect while also erasing useful diagnostic information.
The correct approach is to retrieve and record the codes before clearing anything.
Is there a Toyota warranty extension?
Toyota created Customer Support Program 24TE04 for a coolant leak involving the flow shut-off valve on certain vehicles.
