Toyota CVT Replacement in Berkeley – Art’s Auto

CVT replacement is a major investment. Often, by the time a CVT fails, the vehicle’s value may not justify the cost of replacement-so this isn’t a frequent repair. However, when it’s needed, Art’s Auto has the Toyota service information, Techstream scan tool, and ASE-certified technicians with years of experience to do the job right. So, if you’re in Berkeley or the surrounding area and have Toyota CVT questions, give us a call.

What is a CVT?

CVT stands for continuously variable transmission. To understand how it works, let’s first look at a conventional automatic transmission (AT). An AT typically has between 4 and 10 “speeds,” or gears. Each gear has a fixed ratio that determines how many times the engine turns for each rotation of the drive wheels. The vehicle’s computer shifts between these gears to balance power and fuel efficiency.

A CVT, on the other hand, doesn’t have fixed gear ratios. Instead, it can seamlessly adjust to any ratio within its range. This is beneficial because every engine has an optimal “sweet spot” for efficiency and a different sweet spot for maximum power. With only a few fixed gears, a traditional transmission can’t always keep the engine exactly where it’s most efficient or most powerful-especially during acceleration. A CVT allows the engine to stay closer to the ideal range for either efficiency or power, depending on what’s needed at the moment. This improves both performance and fuel economy compared to conventional automatics.

Which Toyota Models Have a CVT?

  • Toyota Corolla
  • Toyota Corolla Cross
  • Toyota C-HR
  • Toyota Yaris (up to 2020)

What’s the Difference Between a CVT and eCVT?

Toyota’s eCVT only works with the Toyota hybrid system because it relies on two powerful electric motors for its operation. A standard CVT uses a metal drive belt between two hydraulically actuated variable size pulleys.

Toyota’s CVT Reliablity

Toyota’s first belt type CVT appeared in the 2014 Toyota Corolla. The had an eCVT in their hybrids since 2001, but they stuck with mutli-gear automatic transmission up until 2014. Their first attempt was actually pretty solid, unlike Honda, Subaru, and Nissan, all had some pretty major issues with their CVTs, Toyota’s first attempt held up pretty well. The first failure we saw was in 2025 on a 10-year-old 2015 Toyota Corolla with 180,000 miles. Not too shabby, especially when you consider Honda and Nissan CVTs were failing with less that 60,000 miles.

What Can You Do to Prevent CVT Failure?

If you have with a CVT, Toyota says you never need to service the transmission. This just isn’t true. Every automotive fluid needs to be serviced periodically. On this particular 2015 Toyota Corolla CVT, we found the fluid was black a week before the CVT failure. If the fluid had been well maintained, who knows, maybe it would have lasted until 300K.

We recommend servicing your Toyota CVT fluid at least every 60,000 miles. If you’d like to be extra conservative, every 30,000 miles.

Toyota CVT Fluid

As of this writing Toyota only has one type of CVT fluid – Toyota CVT FE. Hallelujah! It’s expensive ($33/quart), but that’s true of most CVT fluids.

In contrast, Subaru has at least five different types of CVT fluid and Honda has two or three. All of them are incompatible, yet somehow aftermarket fluid manufacturers have CVT fluids that are “recommended” to replace all of the fluids from all of the manufacturers.

These aftermarket fluids aren’t substantially cheaper, and it would be impossible for one fluid to be the “same” as several different types of OE fluid, so the only reason to choose an aftermarket fluid is to ease the burden of stocking 20 different fluids. For us, that not enough of a reason, especially when you consider the cost of replacing a CVT. We will buy Idemitsu fluid IF they make the OE fluid and it’s type-specific.

How Much Does A Replacement CVT Cost?

It’s going to vary depending on the car, whether a remanufactured unit is available (they typically aren’t when cars are very new), and when you read this (because prices just keep going up), but for this car it was a bit under $9000. I know CVT service is a lot more expensive that standard AT service, but it pays to change that CVT fluid regularly. $350 seems like a lot for a fluid, but its only every 60K and will probably save you a lot in the long run.

Toyota CVT Replacement

CVT replacement starts with removing the transmission in this Toyota Corolla. It’s pretty much the same as removing an automatic transmission from any modern Japanese car. In fact, it’s more or less the same as removing the transmission from any Toyota with a transverse mounted engine, even the older ones. No special skills are needed here.

Installing a New Toyota CVT

Installing the CVT is pretty straight-forward as well. There are no special skills needed. Any good mechanic should be able to do a good job with the physical installation.

Removing and replacing this Toyota CVT is certainly time consuming, but it’s not confusing in any way.

Only From Toyota

We will only install new or remanufactured CVTs we purchase directly from a Toyota dealership. Why? As I said in the beginning this is an expensive repair, and even if a part has a warranty, losing an entire day of labor is too much for us to risk and buying from Toyota is as close as it comes to a “sure thing”.

Toyota CVT Replacement in Berkeley-Why a Specialist Matters

So, if removing and replacing a Toyota CVT is simple and straightforward, why write about it? Good stories need character development, a problem, a struggle, and eventual triumph – but this job seems to lack all of those.

Honestly, one reason I wrote this is so people searching for “Toyota CVT replacement Berkeley” or “Toyota CVT replacement near me” can find us and get the job done right. But there’s a more important reason: skipping a few critical final steps can ruin your new CVT in just a few miles.

Clearing Memory and Calibration

Here’s what might make this article worth reading for people shopping for CVT replacement or technicians or DIY’er researching before replacing one themselves. The ECM/TCM holds a CVT calibration file in non-volatile memory. It contains everything the unit has learned about controlling the CVT that failed. If it applies that information to the new CVT, it will likely destroy it in short order. It’s absolutely essential that you erase the memory and perform a base calibration before driving the car.

Here are the steps To Reset Memory and Calibrate The CVT:

  1. Reset Memory with the Techstream: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / Reset Memory
  2. Learn the deceleration sensor zero point: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / Deceleration Sensor Zero Point Calibration
  3. Perform the CVT oil pressure calibration
    • Part 1: Sit with the key in the OFF position for 30 seconds and then the ON position for 2 or more seconds.
    • Part 2: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / CVT Oil Pressure Calibration

No Techstream?

I’d wager that many of the OE level scan tools like Autel, Topdon, Launch, and others will also allow you to perform the memory reset and calibration. We own a couple of these tools, but I’ve never checked since we have several Techstreams scanners. If you don’t have an OE level tool either, there are mobile mechanics who own factory scan tools and will come out to perform calibrations and reprogramming for a fee.
